Pierce County Library System
Tacoma, Washington's Pierce County Library System, which has 17 branch libraries, used Steelhead Appliances to reduce WAN data by 90 percent and improve response times by 400 percent.

Summary
PCLS faced significant network congestion transferring data from the server to their branches, while at the same time handling traffic from sometimes more than 50 PCs in a branch. Each T1 line would become massively congested from all the users’ requests, and applications accessing the central servers would be brought to their knees.
PCLS turned to Riverbed. It first tested its Steelhead appliances in a real-world situation, a one-hour pilot test between a remote branch and the central branch location, pushing out new client software binaries to about a dozen PCs at the remote branch with. The data to all PCs was about 2 GB: only 200 MB traveled over the WAN: an 89 percent data reduction for that hour. From there, the decision to deploy across the enterprise was clear.
