与使用大型窗口或其它替代协议来优化 TCP 的其它供应商不同，Riverbed 在改善 TCP 性能的同时还减少了广域网流量，并优化应用协议的性能。
在客户使用长肥网络 (LFN) 时，优化 TCP 性能有助于填充管道。但是，在使用中的应用依赖其自己建立在 TCP 上的繁琐协议时，单纯优化 TCP 不足以改善应用的性能。
此外，某些 TCP 优化产品仅仅是为 LFN 设计的。它们的本质是以牺牲所有其它流量为代价来使管道饱和。由于他们通常很少或者根本没有内置 压缩功能，因此在发送冗余流量—时，并不具有任何优势，他们能做的只是重新发送。
