RIVERBED TECHNOLOGY JOINS EMC NAS PARTNER PROGRAM TO ENABLE ENTERPRISE SITE CONSOLIDATION

New High Performance Edge Core Architecture Set to Redefine Traditional Distributed Systems

San Francisco - June 28, 2004 - Riverbed Technology, a company that improves application performance over enterprise distributed systems and enables the serverless office, announced today that it is working with EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage and management, as part of the EMC NAS Partner Program to assist customers wishing to consolidate their remote IT infrastructure to a centralized data center. The relationship leverages Riverbed's expertise in wide area application performance with EMC's expertise in information storage and management to enable centralization of server and storage resources and the simplification of management. It will also lower backup, security and compliance costs to help customers better manage information throughout its lifecycle.

The increased distributed network performance delivered by Riverbed's Steelhead appliances allows organizations to move IT infrastructure out of isolation in the remote office to a centralized data center with minimal effect on performance. Eliminating network bandwidth and latency issues provides storage administrators the flexibility to centralize information in the data center. Information that is best managed at a central location can now be protected and consolidated utilizing EMC's family of network attached storage (NAS) systems. The deployment of Steelhead appliances enables the full range of EMC NAS solutions to be deployed throughout the corporate infrastructure.

Through Riverbed's participation in the EMC NAS Partner Program, each company is able to provide higher levels of customer service and support,ä said Tom Joyce, Senior Director of NAS Product Marketing at EMC. We look forward to working with Riverbed to assure that our mutual customers have a positive experience. ä

Riverbed's Steelhead appliances speed up performance over distributed networks for core applications used by enterprises to conduct every-day business activities such as email systems like Exchange® and Notes®, file access, backup, and Web-based business applications like ERP and CRM. The Steelhead appliances solve both the limited bandwidth and high latency issues associated with moving all types of data over a Wide Area Network (WAN). By making chatty application protocols more efficient and by eliminating redundant WAN traffic, Riverbed is able to improve performance by up to 100 times.

The NAS Partner Program builds on EMC's already extensive interoperability efforts to develop and deliver products and solutions that work seamlessly with third-party products. The collaboration between Riverbed and EMC provides pre-tested data management and protection solutions that enables enterprise and business class customers to protect mission-critical data across heterogeneous (UNIX, Windows, Linux) and NAS environments. The resulting efficiency dramatically reduces storage administration cost, enhances access to application data and improves backup and recovery flexibility.

Working with EMC allows us to give customers a more viable solution for the serverless office,ä said Jerry Kennelly , CEO, Riverbed Technology. The relationship is a natural fit, giving EMC's customers the ability to rethink the way they deploy their IT infrastructure. I applaud EMC for the vision they demonstrate for embracing a technology that leapfrogs older and incomplete approaches to the problem.
