Passengers begin their journey long before arriving at the airport by first visiting carriers’ websites directly or using websites like Expedia or Kayak to research travel options. If the travel application response time is too slow or if the airline reservation system is not accessible from external travel websites, customers may switch to a competitor’s website, leading to revenue loss. In today’s connected world, it is not unusual for a flight reservation website hosted in the UK to serve customers accessing it from as far as Australia.

Challenge: As the airline industry matured and the competition became fiercer, two trends emerged: consolidation and collaboration. In order to effectively compete on the global scale, smaller airlines either merged together (e.g., KLM and Air France, United and Continental) or got acquired by bigger players (e.g., BMI and Brussels Airways by Lufthansa).
