GeoEngineers, Inc.

Riverbed helps GeoEngineers transition to the cloud and slash data storage costs by 50 percent.

In Brief Content

  • Hybrid cloud model for more efficiency and better IT performance
  • Greater than 50-percent reduction in yearly data storage costs
  • $50,000 to $60,000 savings over two years by eliminating disk-to-disk system
  • 4 to 6 hours/week previously spent on data storage reduced to 1 hour or less
  • Reduced consulting charges projected to save $50,000+/year

Summary Content

GeoEngineers’ previous disk-to-disk data storage process was costing $13,000/year in labor and on-going maintenance costs, and requiring four to six hours per week in IT staff time. Restoring a file took one-half day, and the company could keep only enough data sets to provide a two-week retention period for project data and only one week for SQL data. This situation did not meet the company’s business continuity plan.

A successful history with Riverbed Steelhead WAN optimization appliances encouraged GeoEngineers’ IT team to move in a new direction for data protection – data storage in the public cloud using a Riverbed Whitewater cloud storage gateway in conjunction with the Amazon S3 data storage service. Data storage costs have dropped by more than 50 percent. Costs to maintain and upgrade the disk-to-disk system were eliminated, which is projected to save $50,000 to $60,000 over two years. Administration time spent on data storage processes dropped to one hour or less/week, allowing the IT team to handle more projects themselves and rely less on consultants, saving thousands of dollars each year. With data stored in the cloud, the company has unlimited data retention times and greatly reducing risk to the business. The move to cloud data storage has also greatly improved DR capabilities should the unexpected occur.
