For high performance in the cloud, you need visibility, optimization, and control

SHARE ON:

When moving IT infrastructure to the cloud, many enterprises expect increased productivity, better business agility, and even a competitive advantage. But those expected benefits often prove elusive.

A recent article on APMdigest explores some reasons why. It highlights a study showing that a majority of cloud deployments—public, private, and hybrid—suffered from performance issues even though most of the businesses studied conducted pre-deployment testing.

The study shows that 89% of medium-sized enterprises and 70% of large enterprises experienced performance issues after migrating to the cloud. If it’s such a common problem, why aren’t more enterprises prepared for it? The answer lies in the fact that it's hard to predict reliability and performance in a cloud environment—even with pre-deployment testing—because there are many variables to account for.

Once applications are moved to the cloud, visibility becomes extremely limited without the right tools to pinpoint exactly where bottlenecks are occurring. As the article points out, the problem could often be the corporate Wi-Fi, but it could also be the application itself, something within the cloud provider's infrastructure, or maybe it’s just an issue that impacts a small set of users in a specific location. While existing monitoring solutions can be combined with reports from cloud providers to provide some level of visibility, this piecemeal approach doesn’t always work. So how do successful enterprises sort it all out?

The solution is having a single platform that provides unparalleled visibility, optimization, and control across cloud deployments.

Visibility is where Riverbed® SteelCentral™ comes into play, combining user experience, application, and network monitoring for a deep dive into cloud application performance and delivery. With great success, IT managers have deployed SteelCentral solutions to quickly determine where problems exist in cloud environments, so that the user experience is not disrupted for too long. Once the hiccups are identified, IT staff can then begin to resolve the issue and prevent similar incidents from occurring again.

In the cloud, clear visibility has huge advantages. Take Linkon for example, an independent booker of online travel reservations, whose long app response times were resulting in transaction abandonment. Without the right monitoring tools, Linkon had trouble diagnosing where the holdup was in its cloud seat reservation system. After implementing SteelCentral AppInternals and AppResponse, the company was able to quickly see that there was a problem with the application itself. They were able to show their developers what was causing the slowdown, get it fixed and, as a result, cut booking time from 25 seconds to just 200 milliseconds.

As enterprises are increasingly moving to the cloud, visibility is critical to ensure high levels of application performance, but it’s not the only thing you need. You also need optimization and control with Riverbed® SteelHead™ to boost performance, reduce costs, and choose the best network path for your applications. That’s why JLL, a global commercial real estate company, relies on SteelHead technology to help deliver cloud-based and SaaS apps worldwide—saving millions without sacrificing performance.

In the cloud-driven enterprise, you need the right tools to detect, fix, optimize and maintain performance. Without them, business services and user experience will suffer—and that’s the real reason visibility, optimization, and control aren’t just options, they’re necessities.
