Change is Now!
In October 2016, Bob Dylan became the first musician to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. For Mr. Dylan, this honor was in the making for over 50 years and 1963 was the commemorative year.
In 1963, much of the U.S. news was very reminiscent of what we see in today’s headlines: Civil rights issues and the looming threat of war. In contrast and on a more optimistic side, the computer age was in full swing, giving birth to ASCII code, Bell Labs, the push button telephone, and the foundation of the IEEE. Bob Dylan recorded his immortal “The Times They Are A-Changin',” and indeed they were, both politically and in retrospect, technologically too. Over the last 50 years, we have seen such major milestones in technology as the personal computer and smartphone. Both of these utilize the Internet, what was then a little-known 1960s U.S. defense force project. Indeed, there was a technological revolution taking place and that spirit continues to this day with the newest evolution in technology, SD-WAN.
SD-WAN is a transformational approach to simplify branch office networking and assure optimal application performance. It is specific application of software-defined networking (SDN) technology applied to WAN connections, which are used to connect enterprise networks—including branch offices and data centers—over large geographic distances. Riverbed's SD-WAN solution provides an intelligent and intuitive approach to designing, deploying and managing distributed networks for today's hybrid enterprise.
In Dylan’s song, he warned, “admit that the waters around you have grown”
Indeed, the waters around us have grown… and transformed into something quite different. Compared to a traditional WAN deployment, SD-WAN enables enterprises to deploy their wide area networks 100 times faster with 3 times the cost-savings. Riverbed SteelConnect is the industry’s first and only product to unify network connectivity and orchestration of application delivery across hybrid WANs, cloud networks, and branch LAN/WLANs with centralized policy-based management, dynamic software-defined routing and single-click cloud deployment. Riverbed SteelConnect delivers the agility, performance and visibility enterprises today require through seamless integrations across the Riverbed Application Performance Platform.
Dylan continues with, “If your time to you is worth savin'”
Time is the one thing that we all wish we had more of. There is even an old Chinese proverb that declares “An ounce of gold will not buy an inch of time”—how prophetic! I ask you: Is your time to you worth saving? SD-WAN enables IT and business managers to quickly and easily deploy inexpensive, high-quality, reliable and secure Internet-based connectivity (with its benefits of ubiquity, high bandwidth and low cost). SteelConnect starts with a virtual, menu-driven network design first before anything physical comes on line. Intelligent use of a “shadow appliance” ensures quick deployment of the actual physical appliance. Single-click cloud deployment seamlessly accelerates cloud-to-cloud and cloud-to-datacenter performance. SteelConnect will save you time in deploying branch routers and make them easier to manage.
Finally, Dylan proclaims, “Then you better start swimmin' or you'll sink like a stone, for the times they are a-changin'.”
It’s pretty clear—the future is SD-WAN and if you don’t “start swimmin'.” you might as well go down like a lead zeppelin or remain as relevant as a rotary phone.
Why SD-WAN? Why now?
The SD-WAN market is expected to grow 90% in 5 years, to the tune of almost $6 billion by 2020, as reported by the two big research outfits, IHS and IDC. The SteelConnect solution is poised to disrupt ‘legacy’ network routing market, with the ability to replace thousands of manually configured routers with virtual network design based on zero-touch provisioning and easy change management.
It’s time for a change and change is now. 1963 is the new 2016. Come and be part of the changin’ times with this SD-WAN market revolution and SteelConnect!
