New SteelCentral AppResponse 11 Provides Virtual Network Visibility and Integration with NetProfiler

Heidi Gabrielson

SteelCentral AppResponse 11, powerful, flexible network and application analytics and workflows which speeds problem diagnosis and resolution, was originally introduced to the market in November 2016. It combines network forensics from SteelCentral NetShark with historical network analysis, application analytics and end-user experience monitoring from SteelCentral AppResponse 9 in a single solution that was redesigned from the ground up so you have everything you need at your fingertips to identify and resolve network and application performance issues quickly and easily.

In addition to providing that broad set of capabilities in one box, the thing that sets SteelCentral AppResponse 11 apart from its competitors it that it’s designed for troubleshooting. It captures and stores all packets with 1-second index resolution and microsecond granularity. No sampling so that the data is always there when you need it.

With AppResponse 11, the engineering team has adopted a quasi-Agile approach to development, coming out with new releases every three months or so. The team released SteelCentral AppResponse 11 and SteelCentral Packet Analyzer Plus, versions 11.0.1 in mid-January. It is available now for upgrade for all existing NetShark xx70 customers on active maintenance on the Riverbed support site.

NetShark, Cascade Sensor, and AppResponse customers not on the latest hardware can trade up to SteelCentral AppResponse 11 and gain advanced processing and anlytics to resolve network and application problems even faster and keep their businesses humming. Find out about our very attractive trade up offers!

With this release, AppResponse 11 can now send flow data to SteelCentral NetProfiler, SteelCentral NetExpress or SteelCentral Flow Gateway. Naturally, any data sent from an AppResponse 11 can be accessed via the click-to-packet feature from NetProfiler reports. As a result of this feature, NetProfiler users can auto-recognize more than 1300 applications and they have some of the fastest troubleshooting available, allowing them to go from high-level dashboard views to packets (I.e. answers) in just a few clicks. In addition, AppResponse 11 can synchronize with NetProfiler application definitions.

Being able to monitor virtual network performance and seamlessly integrate it into your physical network environment is critical for a complete network visibility. SteelCentral AppResponse now offers four virtual models, ranging from a 100GB version, a 2TB to an 8TB version. We also offer the Virtual Flow model for those folks who are less interested in packet capture and more interested in high-speed flow-export to SteelCentral NetProfiler. All versions are currently available on VMware ESXi 5.5 and 6.0. Full details are in the chart below:

Finally, we’ve added support for precision time stamps and pre-sliced packet length analysis from the following network packet brokers: Arista, cPacket, Gigamon, and IXIA/Anue. Network Packet Brokers passively direct out-of-band network packets and flow data from multiple access points—SPAN, TAPs, Virtual TAPs to SteelCentral AppResponse 11 for analysis. Traffic is aggregated from all needed access points in the network and the packets deduplicated to provide comprehensive visibility.
