Riverbed R&D: Writing the Future of Cloud Networking & App Performance
Riverbed is a company with a long legacy of market leadership, and a strong reputation for pioneering solutions that make applications work better—whether they are delivered on-premise, as a service, or in the cloud. It’s a legacy we’re proud of.
A lot has changed since the year we first pioneered WAN optimization (2004). Businesses are going digital, are more distributed, and technologies have evolved. Cloud, SaaS, mobile, social, Internet of Things—they all rely on the network and application performance infrastructure. Like any market leader, we’ve had to innovate ahead of the curve and transform our own business in anticipation of future market needs.
Fueled by the rise of cloud and hybrid IT environments, in the last year, we increased our investments in R&D globally as part of a broader strategy to evolve our products to address the demand for a different approach to networking. Today we threw open the doors on our new R&D center in Bangalore—our largest facility outside the USA—and we are committed to growing the local engineering team there by three-fold in the next few years.
By investing to grow our team in Bangalore, we will add some of the world’s top engineering talent and accelerate the delivery of next generation application performance technologies to our customers—critical in this time of rapid change.
The core R&D team in Bangalore—which started with just 5 engineers in 2014—is well on it’s way to building a strong legacy of it’s own. The team has grown to 70+ engineers since then and has played a critical role in advancing development of the company’s flagship product, Riverbed SteelHead—specifically in the areas of mobile, SaaS and cloud.
And today starts a new chapter, one that will center on emerging technology areas such as software-defined edge and software-defined WAN (SD-WAN).
I was thrilled to have had the opportunity to be in Bangalore to celebrate with the team today, alongside our guest of honor, Mr. Nandan Nilekani, co-founder and former chief executive of Infosys; Kartik Subbanna, VP of Engineering, who leads our India R&D team; Jerry Kennelly, our CEO; Rich Hillebrecht, our CIO; Venky Venkaswamy, our VP for India Sales; and a host of customers, partners, analysts and media friends.

Cheers to the next wave of innovation at Riverbed!
