Design & Manufacturing International Organization deploys Riverbed Steelhead Appliances to Consolidate its IT systems to a Private Cloud
Rossignol (www.rossignol.com) is a leading designer and manufacturer of skis, bindings, ski boots, snowboards, technical equipment and clothing. The company is renowned for its innovation (it was
one of the first to manufacture plastic skis) and its clothing and equipment are used by many international athletes. Rossignol has around 1100 employees and an annual turnover of €270m.
Challenge: Consolidate IT resources to a private cloud without affecting application performance or employee productivity
Rossignol has 15 offices around the world, spanning Europe, North America and Asia. Rossignol had decided to consolidate its IT services to a central location in order to reduce the costs associated with managing a decentralized IT infrastructure.
David Lyonnaz, IT director at Rossignol explains, “Prior to the restructure, each regional office had its own set of IT resources, including servers, domain controllers and even enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. These resources were managed locally and IT costs were exploding. We had to centralize.”
At the same time, a decision was taken to consolidate and upgrade a number of disparate ERP systems to a new, centralized ERP system hosted at the company’s main data center. Ongoing step: “While consolidating IT services to a private cloud would deliver cost benefits to the business, we were aware that moving servers and applications farther away from employees could result in poor application performance over the WAN.
We immediately recognized that to achieve our goal of consolidating all of our IT systems, without adversely affecting employee productivity, we would need a WAN optimization solution. It was clear to us that even if we had infinite budget, and could buy as much bandwidth as we wanted, it still wouldn’t deliver the quality of service we required due to the latency associated with many file formats,” says Lyonnaz.
Solution: Riverbed WAN optimization solution improves application performance speeds
Rossignol spent time investigating WAN optimization solutions that would meet its requirements. After conducting much research, the company decided that Riverbed Technology offered the best solution and tested the RiverbedSteelheadappliances on a “try before you buy” basis.
“The results were great. Our ERP system generates invoices and other documents often as PDF file or big office files exchanges, which employees download and read on their PCs,” says Lyonnaz. “In one example accessing a PDF file was reduced from 50 seconds to four seconds. That’s more than a 10 times improvement in performance speeds. Based on these results we decided to deploy the Riverbed solution immediately.”
Benefits: IT resources consolidated to a private cloud infrastructure; an average 7 times improvement in application download speeds resulting in improved employee productivity and 5 times increase in bandwidth capacity
Rossignol installed Steelhead appliances at its data center and the majority of its branch offices in the US, Canada and Europe. With the Steelhead appliances deployed Rossignol has consolidated and upgraded its ERP systems to its private cloud environment. The result has been a reduction in the costs associated with managing and maintaining several business applications across a decentralized environment.
Rossignol has also centralized its data backups with the result that data is now more secure. “Prior to the consolidation project, our employees based in our branch offices had to back up data to tape,” explains Lyonnaz. “Now we no longer need to rely on local staff to carry out this function, our data is securely backed up each day and employees can concentrate on selling and so deliver more value back to the business.”
And despite removing local servers and redeploying services to a central data center employees have not been adversely affected by the consolidation project. Instead Rossignol has experienced, on average, a 7 times improvement in application performance speeds. “Prior to Riverbed it could take up to 52 seconds to open a Powerpoint file, now it’s around nine seconds,” explains Lyonnaz.
“In our Swiss office, we removed the servers and installed Riverbed overnight. Employees noticed a sudden improvement in the time taken to access data and files, and called to ask where we had installed the new server. They couldn’t believe it when we told them the IT services were being delivered from our data center.”
Rossignol has also seen a 5 times increase in bandwidth capacity. “The performance results we get from the Steelhead appliances are even
better than expected, and we have now consolidated our CAD (ProE) systems to our private cloud,” says Lyonnaz.
“In order to consolidate our IT services to a private cloud we had to ensure that our employees would not be affected by poor application performance over the WAN. The Riverbed products are one of the bricks that have enabled us to achieve our goals, reduce costs, contribute to green IT and in the process we have seen employee productivity increase,” concludes Lyonnaz.
Rossignol’s IT infrastructure was expanding, and the company wanted to centralize its IT resources to a private cloud in order to improve overall IT management and reduce costs. However Rossignol was aware that moving from a decentralized to a centralized IT infrastructure could adversely affect employee productivity.
Rosignol deployed Riverbed Steelhead appliances across its data center and most regional offices. As a result Rosignol has now successfully consolidated its ERP and data backup systems to its private cloud and experienced an average 7 times improvement in application performance speeds, resulting in reduced costs and improved employee productivity.
