Mammoet

Riverbed Steelhead appliances enable IT consolidation and reduce costs for turnkey lifting and transport company

Mammoet (www.mammoet.com) is a specialist in customer-driven and tailor-made heavy lifting and transport solutions for onshore and offshore locations. Its activities focus on the petrochemical industry, civil projects, power plant facilities, offshore businesses and marine projects. The company has 3500 employees and approximately 60 offices worldwide encompassing the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Challenge: Move IT systems to a central data center without adversely affecting employee productivity

Mammoet wanted to consolidate its IT infrastructure and reduce the number of physical locations with local servers from 30 to six. A newly designed wide area network (WAN) would replace dozens of local servers with three data centers located in Europe, Asia and the USA. This would enable remote workers to access documents and files anytime and anywhere. The company’s key applications include SAP, Microsoft Office suite and Microsoft Outlook.

In addition to the productivity and collaborative benefits of consolidation, this new model would also enable fast replication of data between the data centers, so that if one data center shut down, another could take over. This architecture would offer high levels of redundancy and availability. However, Mammoet was concerned that removing local servers and replacing them with a centralized IT solution would result in poor application performance over the WAN and reduced employee productivity. Hartger Brasjen, ICT/infrastructure manager at Mammoet says “We wanted a solution that would enable the company to offer its employees local area network (LAN)-like access over the WAN and decided that WAN optimization was the best solution for this.”

Solution: Riverbed Steelhead appliances prove to be more efficient and cost effective

Mammoet worked with its technology partner to test a number of potential WAN optimization solutions. “From the tests it was apparent that Riverbed Steelhead appliances were really easy to configure – this was one of the most important reasons for choosing Riverbed,” says Brasjen, “You unpack the Steelhead appliance, give it a network address and it works! The other alternatives were more trouble when it came to configuration – during the trials, some vendors spent two days setting up their system whereas Riverbed was finished in an hour.”

Benefits: IT Consolidation project undertaken with no increase in bandwidth, and remote workers have easy access to critical applications

Mammoet has installed 40 Riverbed Steelhead appliances across its data centers and 80 per cent of its branch offices. As a result, the company has been able to remove 24 servers from remote sites, resulting in reduced management and maintenance costs across the organization. The company has also seen a massive reduction in data traffic and data storage requirements as a result of deploying the Riverbed solution. For example, hard disk storage data (ISCI target) has been reduced by almost 79%, CIFs by 66%, and MAPI by 73%. Mammoet has also installed a Central Management Console (CMC), which provides the ability to deploy, configure and manage the Steelhead appliances from a central location.

In addition to the successful installation of the Steelhead appliances, Mammoet has opted to deploy the Riverbed Steelhead Mobile client software, as it offered the advantage of enabling mobile workers the ability to access files and data as quickly and easily as their branch office colleagues. “Our remote employees can now access information when working at a client’s site. Our employees are now productive no matter where they are in the world,” explains Brasjen.

“In addition to installation on the laptops of mobile workers, we’re also using the Steelhead Mobile solution in offices that have less than five employees, as it is a cost efficient way to deliver LAN-like speeds to our smaller offices. Riverbed really has provided us with a range of solutions to meet our needs for both today and tomorrow.”

SUMMARY

Mammoet wanted to consolidate its IT infrastructure from a decentralized infrastructure to three data centers. In order to ensure application performance and speed the replication of data between data centers for DR, Mammoet had the choice of upgrading its bandwidth capacity, which would have been costly and delivered limited benefits, or using a WAN optimization solution. The company opted for the latter, and after testing a number of alternatives, chose Riverbed.

As a result, Mammoet has been able to streamline its IT infrastructure, reduce costs and has experienced a 3x reduction in bandwidth utilization. Mammoet also installed Riverbed Steelhead Mobile, which has given remote workers the ability to access data at LAN-like speeds regardless of where the users are located in the world.
