SAN FRANCISCO—March 27, 2012— Organizations worldwide are using Riverbed’s broad suite of performance solutions that span wide area network (WAN) optimization, edge virtual server infrastructure (edge-VSI), application-aware network performance management (NPM), application delivery, web content optimization (WCO), and cloud data protection for backup and disaster recovery. To share a real-world experience using Riverbed performance solutions, customer Patrick Lynch of ExactTarget will discuss his organization’s use of WAN optimization solutions and his plans to evaluate cloud storage as a key part of the company’s disaster recovery (DR) strategy. Conference-goers can attend the case study presentation by Mr. Lynch:

ExactTarget, a leading global provider of on-demand email marketing and interactive marketing solutions, services customers by sending out seven billion emails per month. The company has roughly four petabytes of data under storage, including customer and configuration/system databases, which it replicates between its Indianapolis and Las Vegas data centers. Consumer click data for its customers is mission critical, with a 100% uptime requirement. However, latency led to slow data transfers and underutilization (10%) of the available bandwidth. By deploying WAN optimization technology, ExactTarget was able to speed replication by 20% and is now able to better utilize available bandwidth. And while backups are currently done with tape, the company is planning to evaluate cloud storage as a key part of its DR strategy
Though organizations reap great benefits from IT consolidation initiatives, ultimately having data and servers living in fewer places, they encounter performance challenges and the need to protect data more often and recovering quickly becomes increasingly important. To overcome performance challenges associated with DR and business continuity, many organizations are deploying Steelhead® products to accelerate DR making the process more efficient and reliable, as well as Whitewater® cloud storage gateways to enhance data protection, thereby improving their recovery time (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO). To support customers that are restructuring their IT architecture to achieve complete consolidation, Riverbed recently introduced a revolutionary solution, Granite™, which enables customers to increase control of their IT infrastructure and eliminate costly backup and recovery processes in remote locations by consolidating underutilized edge servers and storage.
Accelerate Replication Times Without Sacrificing Performance: WAN-Optimierung
Riverbed Steelhead WAN optimization solutions help distributed organizations consolidate IT infrastructure to increase productivity and efficiency, while enhancing business resilience and controlling costs. As replication has emerged as a preferred strategy for more frequent and seamless protection of storage between data centers, many enterprises have also chosen to deploy Riverbed Steelhead appliances to accelerate DR operations by, in some cases, up to 55 times, and to reduce WAN bandwidth requirements by up to 95 percent.
Whitewater Cloud Storage Gateways for Easy, Secure and Efficient DR
Whitewater gateways deduplicate, compress and encrypt backup data to reduce storage costs in the cloud. Whitewater enables organizations to easily and securely obtain the benefits of the public cloud’s flexibility, scalability and pay-per-use pricing, without changes to their existing infrastructure. This frees data protection staff from labor-intensive tape backup and tape infrastructure management with no changes to their operations. In the event of a disaster, the secure cloud copy can be restored to any location and provides a strong DR solution without the need to purchase and maintain expensive hardware in remote locations.
Rethinking the Architecture - Edge-Virtual Server Infrastructure: Granite
Granite is the revolutionary product that introduces a new architectural approach known as edge virtual server infrastructure (edge-VSI) that enables global enterprises to completely consolidate edge applications, servers and storage to the data center. Edge-VSI does to edge servers what virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) for desktops. Applications and services are virtualized and managed from a central data center, yet projected out to the edge of a network where they perform as if they were local. Granite radically reduces operational burden on IT managers while massively increasing their control over the infrastructure — all at a lower TCO.
