PT Siemens Indonesia, an electronics and electrical engineering company, has invested in Riverbed SteelHead and SteelFusion solutions to solve thenetwork and application performance issues that were impactingoperations at its global turbine manufacturing plant in Indonesia. Thedeployment has yielded cost-savings, reduced IT maintenance manhours, and enhanced productivity and collaboration.
Siemens Indonesia Improves Manufacturing Productivity with Riverbed SteelHead and SteelFusion Solutions
Siemens is one of the largest and oldest European engineering companies in Indonesia, delivering cutting-edge solutions and technologies in the fields of energy, industry, healthcare, and infrastructure and cities. Established in 1909, PT Siemens Indonesia employs over 1,800 people.
Challenge: Limited bandwidth and large server footprint at manufacturing site
PT Siemens Indonesia operates across several cities in Indonesia, and its wide-area network (WAN) is the foundation of its globally connected enterprise, enabling collaboration, communication, business productivity, and risk mitigation.
“To support our daily operations, it is paramount for our offices and manufacturing sites to have a high-performance WAN as a foundation for seamless connectivity and productivity,” says Rifan Adi, Head of IT, PT Siemens Indonesia.
One of the company’s most important manufacturing sites is the Cilegon factory in Banten, Indonesia. It produces power plant components mostly for Siemens international projects worldwide. This plant has invested heavily in a server, storage and backup infrastructure to support over 200 users and a data volume of approximately 700 GB. It also depends a on a 2Mbps leased WAN line to access centralized applications hosted in a datacenter located 100 kilometers away in Jakarta.
To simplify and reduce costs, PT Siemens Indonesia wanted to consolidate infrastructure in the datacenter. However, a previous attempt to centralize the file server caused a performance lag, especially with transfers of large packages of data during office hours. This negatively affected the productivity of teams in the manufacturing plant.
- Limited WAN bandwidth
- Distributed file servers at each remote area were too costly to operate
- Oversized server, storage, and backup footprint at remote site
- SteelHead EX with SteelFusion software
- Riverbed SteelFusion Core
- Riverbed Virtual Services Platform (VSP)
- Significant improvement in network and application performance at remote site
- Cost-savings through reduction of physical servers
- Centralized data backup & recovery; and deployment of new services
Solution: SteelHead WAN optimization, SteelFusion, and VSP
PT Siemens Indonesia embarked on an IT consolidation project to reduce the number of physical servers, storage, and backup machines located at its Cilegon factory. It required a centralized method for the management of storage, backup and restoration of data, as well as the ease of deployment of new services at the factory. In addition, the company sought to upgrade and optimize its WAN performance to ensure smooth global communications at the factory.
PT Siemens Indonesia decided to work with Riverbed Technology because of its proven leadership in application performance infrastructure. For example, Riverbed SteelHead has been named a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for WAN optimization controllers for six consecutive years, with more than 50% market share.
PT Siemens Indonesia deployed Riverbed SteelHead EX featuring the Riverbed Virtual Services Platform (VSP) and SteelFusion in its Cilegon factory, eliminating the need for physical servers at remote sites and centralizing data, while still ensuring high performance for its local file server. The solution included SteelHead and Riverbed SteelFusion Core Standard Edition in its Jakarta datacenter.
Benefits: Cost savings better WAN performance, less IT support for remote site
With Riverbed WAN optimization and branch converged infrastructure solutions—SteelHead and SteelFusion, respectively—the networks run faster and are more efficient. The solution delivers consistent service levels while cutting the costs of IT infrastructure and services for PT Siemens Indonesia.
SteelFusion Edge Standard Edition streams data back to PT Siemens Indonesia’s datacenter using the normally unused upstream bandwidth. This has freed up downstream bandwidth for use by other centralized applications and yields local performance for its consolidated file server.
The improved WAN performance not only enhances productivity, but reduces user complaints as well. As Adi explains, “With Riverbed SteelHead and SteelFusion, we have shown that our branch operations can have the same level of network and application performance as in our main offices.”
Through the IT consolidation enabled by Riverbed application performance solutions, PT Siemens Indonesia reduced five physical servers down to just one converged branch appliance at the Cilegon factory without compromising performance. Requirements for IT support and maintenance have been significantly lessened with the centralized management of data backup, fast recovery and the simplified deployment of new services.
Enjoying the benefits of location—independent computing (the ability to host applications and data in the most optimal locations while ensuring flawless delivery and best user experiences), users at the Cilegon factory can now access their data locally even in the event of a WAN outage. This has even enabled Siemens Indonesia to put in place a stronger business continuity IT plan.
