SAN FRANCISCO—May 10, 2012— Duke CE, a support organization for Duke University, produces customized executive education programs to help large corporations meet their specific business goals. Duke CE believes that education can increase the success of an organization by enabling its people to adopt new concepts, new actions and new behaviors. After expanding across four continents, Duke CE realized it needed a way to ensure all of its global employees, including mobile workers, had equal and timely access to its corporate applications that were centralized in its private cloud environment. After evaluating multiple WAN optimization products, including those from Cisco and Blue Coat, Duke CE selected Riverbed Steelhead appliances and Steelhead Mobile client software because of the solutions' ability to deliver superior application performance.
"Our global reach is a core part of our business structure, so we have employees that are delivering education programs halfway around the world, but the core data is centralized in the other half of the world," said Eric Logeson, systems architect, Duke Corporate Education. "We couldn't afford to build data centers in three or four parts of the world but as we continued to expand, we knew we needed a way for our remote employees to have instantaneous access to information. Once we installed the Steelhead products, we saw a dramatic improvement in application response times, with software update delivery times alone decreasing from five minutes to 10 seconds. We had such a great experience with the Steelhead products, in fact, that as soon as we needed to accelerate SharePoint, we chose another Riverbed product, Stingray Aptimizer."
SharePoint is used by more than half of the company, but many employees were discouraged to use the collaboration tool after having to wait minutes for the webpages to render within the centralized SharePoint application. Stingray Aptimizer reduces page load times and reduces bandwidth by instantly transforming the content that is delivered from a Web server to the website viewer, accelerating website performance. As a result of deploying Stingray Aptimizer, Duke CE has experienced improved performance across various critical operations, including document management and reporting, and increased collaboration amongst globally distributed staff.
