Gartner on Riverbed: A 'Leader' in NPMD
Big news: Gartner has placed Riverbed in the Leaders quadrant of the 2019 Magic Quadrant for Network Performance Monitoring and Diagnostics. This is the sixth consecutive year we've received that recognition, and we couldn't be prouder.
As Gartner puts it in the report, "The Leaders quadrant represents those vendors that are pushing the NPMD market forward, including those with comprehensive portfolios and the ability to handle broad sets of data inputs and analytical techniques. They offer a choice of hardware or software appliances for optimum flexibility, while making formerly premium-priced NPMD solutions attainable in the broader market. Leaders offer a high degree of application-aware insight and visibility, along with advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics workflows."
Riverbed Vice President of Product Marketing Nik Koutsoukos reflected in a recent blog post on how Riverbed has been able maintain its high level of industry esteem so consistently. We spoke to him to go deeper, and he emphasized that Riverbed has delivered innovation while never losing sight of the needs of its existing customers.
"In some ways," he says, "it's easy to be an innovator: you get some smart people, you solve a very narrow set of problems, and you release a solution. Or, you could fall back into your install base and just maintain it — just give them some new incremental features here and there, support them, fix the bugs, and keep milking it.
"But can you do both?" he asks. "Can you innovate and still maintain and support the installed base? That's why Riverbed is a leader in NPMD: We have consistently delivered on both fronts."
Commitment to customers
Riverbed's NPMD solutions occupy a big footprint in the marketplace: the company supports more than 3,000 active customers on a daily basis. "We also have a huge community of partners," Koutsoukos says. "There are over two hundred qualifying, certified partners for SteelCentral NPMD that we train and support to help to drive their business forward."
And to help drive the entire ecosystem, Riverbed also offers extensive training to customers and anyone else interested in learning how its products work. The Riverbed Certified Performance Engineering training program is a sign of Riverbed's strong commitment to its customers.
Always moving forward
Those existing customers are also reaping the benefits of Riverbed's ongoing innovations. There were two areas where Riverbed really moved its NPMD game forward over the past year:
- The Riverbed SteelCentral NPM tools are available in the cloud, providing both packet and flow data
- The SteelCentral Advanced Security Module uses Riverbed's big data capabilities to spot security threats using analytics and threat intelligence to enable fast remediation.
And security is only the tip of the analytics iceberg, as Riverbed presses forward to surface analytics data across domains. "SteelCentral has an extremely broad portfolio of NPMD solutions covering end user devices, applications, and infrastructure," says Koutsoukos. "More and more, we aim to help you leverage all the data that we collect so you can make decisions that drive growth."
The experience is all
One tool in the NPMD toolbox that's unique to Riverbed is Aternity, which provides end-user experience monitoring. To Koutsoukos, that capability is at the center of what will keep Riverbed an industry leader for years to come.
"The user experience is the only thing that matters at the end of the day," he says. "Why do companies build systems and applications? Why do they transform things? Because at the end of all this, there is an employee, there’s a customer, there’s a partner, there’s a user. And if they're having a great experience the business is going to do well. If you don’t have a way of measuring and knowing what that user experience is, you’re at a disadvantage.
"There will be more and more integrations between our end user experience monitoring capability and NPMD," he says. "Stay tuned."
