New SteelCentral AppResponse 8170 Appliance Goes Large on Scale, Features, and Ease of Use

Godzilla. Blue whales. Jupiter. These are just a few apt comparisons for the new Riverbed SteelCentral AppResponse 8170 appliance and its unprecedented ability to scale to larger jobs than ever before. This new model, powered by the just-released SteelCentral AppResponse 11.2 software, will meet the transaction volume and speed requirements of even the largest enterprises.

By request: Riverbed's largest AppResponse appliance ever

It would be wrong to call the 8170 appliance "larger than life," because it's actually the result of real-world Riverbed customer requests. Now that Riverbed users have had the better part of a year to become acquainted with AppResponse 11's advanced application and transaction insights, comprehensive end-user experience monitoring, and deep network intelligence, many of Riverbed's larger customers are asking for more, more, more.

That's precisely what Riverbed designed the 8170 appliance to deliver: greater capacity in the same rack-space means a better value and greater ease of administration that comes from managing fewer appliances.

As the flagship, the 8170 is intended to cover the very largest use cases, like national call centers, Fortune 500 company datacenters, airlines, government organizations, and the like. In other words, organizations whose infrastructures routinely support thousands upon thousands of simultaneous transactions and which cannot afford to ever, ever go down.

With 1.152 petabytes of storage, the 8170 offers much more packet storage than the AppResponse 6170 model. You'll also be happy with the new 40 gigabit-per-second network interface card, offering connectivity to higher-speed links often used in large datacenters. With the ability to send double the number of connection flow records to NetProfiler each minute and support 15,000 simultaneous phone calls (previously: 6,000), the 8170 is the current state-of-the-art build for the largest enterprise applications.

AppResponse 11.2 software: Key feature and interface improvements

To go with the 8170’s incredible scale, the AppResponse 11.2 software release delivers the largest features update since the original launch, many of which bring ease-of-use and workflow improvements to AppResponse's friendly web-based interface. New features include:

  • Storage status and health monitoring
  • Ability to back up and restore configurations
  • Favorites in the Insight and Navigator drop-downs
  • Support for the FIPS 104-2 crypto certification
  • Richer policy alert emails, with optional attractively formatted PDFs
  • SNMP trap notifications (policyTrap and hardwareTrap)

Users will also encounter more user-interface paths through which to dive into the specific information they're seeking, as well as more options for setting up alerts. AppResponse 11.2 aims to hold down the fort even while you're away from it.

New: Unified Communications Analysis

Another key addition is the optional Unified Communications Analysis module, which provides real-time and historical analysis of voice and video performance calls with the ability to drill-down to the underlying problem and understand the interaction of voice, video, audio, and data traffic. A trio of views offer insights by UC traffic summary, VoIP/video call summary, and individual UC host group analysis.

All UC Traffic in AppRepsonse 11

Figure 1. Also introduced in the SteelCentral AppResponse 11.2 release is the Unified Communications Analysis (UCA) module. UCA takes the place of the VoIP and the UC Management modules in the prior versions of AppResponse. The UCA Summary provides an overview of the available voice and video metrics and summarizes them on one screen. Available metrics include voice/video channels, bandwidth usage, call quality, quality by host groups, and more.

With these powerful tools you can easily troubleshoot the source of poor call quality, proactively monitor voice and video call quality, and set meaningful SLAs based on how call quality is affecting the business. When paired with the flagship AppResponse 8170 appliance, the UCA can process up to 15,000 simultaneous conversations: just the combination for massive call centers and high-traffic datacenters.

The best AppResponse yet

With its newfound and unprecedented scaling capabilities, the 8170 delivers world-class application performance management and user-experience monitoring to even the largest organizations. And AppResponse 11.2 software users across all appliances will enjoy a more refined interface, much-requested features like SNMP trap notifications, and the powerful new Unified Communications Analysis module.
