SAN FRANCISCO – March 8, 2017 – Riverbed Technology today announced that Switzerland-based BOBST Group, a leading global supplier of equipment and services to the packaging and label industries, is using an integrated solution – with Riverbed® SteelCentral™, Riverbed® SteelFusion™ and Riverbed® SteelHead™ – to set a new standard in application and network performance with improved visibility, agility, app performance, data security, and branch office IT infrastructure management across the enterprise.
Headquartered in Switzerland, BOBST has around 5,000 employees globally, a presence in more than 50 countries, and 12 production facilities across three continents providing machines, services, workflows and consumables for packaging and label producers and brand owners. A leader in innovation, BOBST was the first company to introduce digital printing to the industry.
A highly successful growth strategy has seen BOBST acquire many companies, with numerous new branch offices being integrated into the IT infrastructure. Each site had its own physical and virtual servers, local storage, services and backup, making the vast IT landscape difficult to manage. A localized backup system was making it challenging to provide comprehensive data protection, with implications for disaster recovery. With Riverbed SteelFusion, BOBST is now able to consolidate 100% of its global branch office data and IT infrastructure in the data center, allowing new sites to be quickly set up and enabling fast recovery in the event of a site failure – all without any compromise to application performance for remote workers.
“Previously, we had to rely on the local branch managers to do the backups,” said Xavier Plautard, Group IT Infrastructure Manager at BOBST. “Before Riverbed, setting up a new branch office was a painful process. Thanks to Riverbed, it’s now much smoother for us to integrate new companies into our business. Riverbed SteelFusion sets a new standard in application and network performance – it’s like having a data center in a box. SteelFusion is the way to go.”
BOBST employees also complained about poor application performance, which the company tried to resolve with expensive bandwidth upgrades. The integration of Riverbed SteelCentral for performance monitoring and management provided BOBST with end-to-end visibility into app performance from code to device. Industry-leading optimization provided by Riverbed SteelHead improved application performance across their hybrid network while using less bandwidth. “Before using Riverbed, it often took users in Italy and India 30 minutes to start running a specific mission critical application; with SteelHead, it now only takes ten seconds,” said Plautard. The solution delivers considerable cost savings while ensuring optimal performance of applications and services to all remote offices. With SteelHead, the company was also able avoid expensive bandwidth upgrades. SteelHead technology is also fully integrated within every SteelFusion Edge appliance.
“We used SteelCentral to measure what happens on the WAN and discovered that 60% of the traffic was internet-related,” explained Plautard. “SteelCentral has many helpful features, and the reporting as well as dashboard functionality really add value. We set up customized dashboards for our developers, as well as solutions and business application teams, because they all wanted to see how their applications were performing. The first thing we noticed with the Riverbed solution is that we didn’t need to upgrade the bandwidth for 12 months. We have optimized how the network and applications work, and as a result, we’ve been able to significantly reduce network traffic, for example, antivirus traffic has gone from 30% to almost zero.”
