Save on expensive mobile data charges
Steelhead Mobile software reduces bandwidth use by 85 to 99%. That reduction leads to real savings in mobile data plans, especially when connecting over data cards and satellite links.
No infrastructure changes required
Steelhead Mobile software works in perfect harmony with other Steelhead appliances. IT managers need not make any changes to routers, VPN infrastructure, SSL/HTTPS servers, or any other key technologies.
Accelerates Windows 7 and 64-bit systems
With the latest version of Steelhead Mobile software, you can improve the performance of Microsoft’s entire catalog of operating systems, as well as 64-bit systems required by memory and data-intensive applications like Revit.
Faster access for everyone equals a global increase in productivity
A performance optimization solution for branch office and mobile workers
Steelhead Mobile software reduces delays by using URL learning, page parsing, embedded object pre-fetching, and metadata acceleration modes.
Business-critical web applications accelerate up to 60 times faster
Examples include:
- Microsoft SharePoint
- Microsoft Windows applications (e.g., SMBv2, Outlook anywhere, Kerberos)
- Intranet portals
- Document management systems
- ERP and CRM applications (e.g., SAP NetWeaver, JD Edwards, Siebel)
Share optimized data for improved performance
For an even greater level of overall acceleration, mobile and branch office workers can share their data on WAN optimization. Steelhead Mobile software uses that information to deliver higher performance for everyone.

We recommend the following resources to help you justify an investment in WAN optimization for your organization:
“With Riverbed, our return on investment was approximately 18 months, including maintenance fees. Even with telecom prices coming down, it still makes sense to use WAN optimization technology.”

Optimizes your mobile environment
Users see the vastly improved performance, not the software
Steelhead Mobile software reduces delays by using URL learning, page parsing, embedded object pre-fetching, and metadata acceleration modes.
Once installed on a laptop or desktop, Steelhead Mobile software is invisible to the end user. All they’ll see is faster performance of their files transfers and applications, including Oracle E-Business Suite, Lotus Notes, and Microsoft Exchange.
Quickly scale to your entire mobile staff
As more and more people work remotely and from home, Steelhead Mobile software easily scales network performance to hundreds of thousands of mobile users.
Complete control over optimization
Using the Riverbed Steelhead® Mobile Controller (SMC) you can manage the configuration policies that determine what optimizations take place per user or groups of users. If you like, let users see Steelhead Mobile-related information or make it completely invisible.

The Steelhead Mobile Controller (SMC) manages Steelhead Mobile licenses and controls the deployment, management, and reporting of Steelhead Mobile client software.
We offer two models of the Steelhead Mobile Controller, so you can choose the one that best meets your specific needs:
- The Steelhead Mobile Controller appliance (SMC) is designed for large deployments and rapidly growing organizations. This 1U rackable standalone appliance is deployed in the data center. It comes with 40 concurrent licenses, supports up to 4,000 licenses, and can be clustered to scale to optimize even larger mobile deployments.
- The Steelhead Mobile Controller Virtual Edition (SMC-VE) provides enterprise-grade acceleration for small-and medium-sized businesses (SMB) or smaller strategic mobile deployments. The SMC-VE is a virtual package deployed in the Riverbed® Services Platform (RSP) on the Steelhead appliance. Its 10 initial licenses and total capacity of 100 licenses make it easier and more cost-effective to target mobile users in environments where the additional scale of the Steelhead Mobile Controller appliance is unnecessary.
Both Steelhead Mobile Controller models offer the same industry-leading speed, simplicity, and flexibility so you can quickly and easily deploy Steelhead Mobile to all your mobile and remote workers.
The Steelhead Mobile Controller:
- Deploys easily, with flexible configuration options. The SMC uses simple MSI software packages to push out Steelhead Mobile to end-user laptops and PCs. The software can be deployed in "visible" mode, where users can see the Steelhead Mobile software running in their icon tray and adjust a few options, or "invisible" mode, where only the administrator knows that the Steelhead Mobile software is running on the machine.
- Operates under an efficient, cost-effective, and scalable concurrent licensing model. Instead of buying a license for each individual end-user, IT administrators simply manage a pool of licenses on a Steelhead Mobile Controller. Anyone running the Steelhead Mobile software on their systems can use these licenses, so users throughout the organization can all benefit from Steelhead Mobile’s powerful WAN acceleration.
- IT administrators can manage licenses easily and scale as needed by adding new licenses to the pool of concurrent licenses.
- Organizations can control costs by purchasing only the number of licenses they really need.
- Link-based licensing and enhanced Steelhead auto-detection make individual licenses go even farther by allowing license management at the adaptor level and by releasing a license when a local Steelhead appliance can be used for optimization. This flexibility allows IT administrators to make Steelhead Mobile software part of the standard operating environment, including the software on every machine as they image it, without incurring additional costs.
- Provides in-depth reporting capabilities. Like the CMC for Steelhead appliances, the SMC includes in-depth reporting on Steelhead Mobile client performance. Using the Steelhead Mobile Controller, IT managers can report aggregated or individual statistics on throughput improvements, as well as bandwidth optimization.
- Scales to meet the needs of any organization. The SMC Virtual Edition has a total capacity of 100 licenses, while the SMC appliance can support up to 4,000 concurrent Steelhead Mobile clients. The SMC appliance can be clustered to scale beyond the capacity of an individual SMC appliance. Clustering also creates high-availability configurations that ensure users always have accelerated mobile access to key applications and data
