Riverbed® Stingray™ Traffic Manager is a full performance software and virtual Layer 7 application delivery controller (ADC) that enables enterprises and cloud operators to create, manage, and deliver key services more quickly, more flexibly, and at a lower cost. Stingray Traffic Manager offers much more than just load balancing. It controls and optimizes end-user services by inspecting, transforming, prioritizing, and routing application traffic.
-
Availability
Improved reliability and scalability - Stingray Traffic Manager software includes health and performance monitors to balance client requests across the fastest servers. Seamless application scaling protects against compound failures at all levels.
| Server Load Balancing |
Load balancing makes it possible to share load between pools of servers serving identical content to achieve optimal resource utilization, maximize throughput, minimize response time, and avoid overload (fault tolerance). View the brief | Watch the video |
Multi-site manager
|
Multi-site manager provides a coordinated view of the application delivery fabric that may span multiple, geographically distributed, data centers and cloud-based environments. It greatly reduces the complexity of multi-site installations and makes it easier to manage clusters of Stingray Traffic Manager deployments. View the brief |
| Global load balancing |
Global load balancing allows the distribution of traffic across locations based on availability, performance, and user-defined rules to provide business continuity and improved performance across globally distributed locations. |
| Session persistence |
This feature ensures that multiple requests from the same client session are sent to the same back-end server with no disruption to service. It enables application data to persist throughout a session without using cookies (e.g., shopping cart basket). |
| Application health monitoring |
Application health monitoring tracks the health of traffic managers and back-ends and raises alerts and routes around failed nodes when an error is detected. |
| Service level monitoring |
Measure and react to changes in response times by comparing response times to a conformance value. Service level monitoring also issues an alert if performance levels fall below a certain level. |
-
Performance
Application acceleration - Offload compute-intensive tasks while integrating HTTP content caching for reduced load on your infrastructure. TCP offload, traffic buffering, concurrency control, and more let applications run at peak performance.
| SSL offload |
SSL offload encrypts/decrypts data securely over the Internet using a key agreed between the server and client machines for the purpose of authentication. By offloading the processor-intensive public-key encryption algorithms, CPU cycles on servers are fully available for generating content. View the brief | Watch the video |
| Content caching |
This application acceleration feature stores copies of requested data in memory and can return the content directly to the client without having to forward the request to a back-end web server. |
| Content compression |
This feature compresses HTTP content returned to the client to speed content delivery and provide better user experience. |
| HTTP connection multiplexing |
Connection multiplexing pools a large number of incoming TCP connection requests from individual clients into a small number of connections to the application servers, bringing big performance and capacity gains. |
| Differentiate and Prioritise |
Stingray TrafficScript™is a sophisticated programming language integrated into the Stingray Traffic Manager software core. With Stingray TrafficScript you can select out different classes of service or transactions, and prioritize your most valuable users. Read the fact sheet |
| Web Content Optimization |
Integrated web content optimization technology transforms HTML content to improve web performance for high traffic public-facing web pages, e-commerce sites and custom applications, and speed up page loads for enterprise applications such as SharePoint for more productivity and collaboration. |
-
Protection
Increased security - Guard applications with server isolation, request and response scrubbing, request validation, and protective traffic shaping. Also defend against direct attacks, invalid or malformed requests, and malicious or incidental flash floods.
| Bandwidth management |
This feature applies limits on the bandwidth used by connections to the back-end nodes. It could, for example, stop a popular site from taking up so much bandwidth that other sites become unavailable; enable service providers to enforce access limits based on, say, account type or physical location; and, limit outbound traffic to users or servers. |
| Request rate shaping |
This capability allows for specific limits to be set on a wide range of events with very fine-grained control over how events are identified. Impose per-second or per-minute rates on events, such as a slow service being flooded with requests. |
| Service protection classes |
Protect services from basic misuse and attacks, such as Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), and mitigate risks associated with Internet hosting. |
| Security and Compliance |
Integrated application-aware firewall helps comply with the requirements of PCI DSS and offers scalable application protection without loss of throughput. |
-
Control
Integration and control - Implement traffic management policies with Stingray RuleBuilder™ and Stingray TrafficScript™ language, or create Java™ extensions for complex business rules. Integrate Stingray Traffic Manager within existing application management and orchestration infrastructure with REST APIs or Riverbed FlyScript™.
| TrafficScript |
This sophisticated programming language is integrated into the Stingray Traffic Manager software core. With Stingray TrafficScript language you control how traffic is managed to prioritize your most valuable users. Read the fact sheet |
| FlyScript |
Riverbed FlyScript™ developer tools allow you to customize and integrate the Riverbed performance platform in your environment, using Python developer toolkit develop custom modules and applications. The software development kit (SDK) is built on top of REST APIs to simplify the coding process. |
| Activity monitoring and diagnostics |
Real-time reporting and historical graphs chart the activity of applications via a web-based interface, OR remote access using REST, SNMP, and SOAP. Combined with one-click self-diagnostics and detailed fault analysis, you can plan for future capacity requirements and isolate faults rapidly, reducing the time to resolution. |
| Real-time analytics |
Deep insight into application traffic supports operational staff when diagnosing problems and anomalies, and shows test and development staff how clients interact with their applications. |
| Application Auto-scaling |
Stingray Traffic Manager can monitor the performance of a service running on a supported virtual or cloud platform. When the performance falls outside the desired service level, it will automatically load balance traffic to the new instances as soon as they are available. |

Content caching makes all the difference
Gilt Groupe cuts its downtime and increases customer satisfaction
Specialized caching decreases latency and increases the speed, performance, and overall user experience of Gilt Groupe's website. Cached content is as close to users as possible, reducing trips to the back-end servers to retrieve data. In California, for example, customers are seeing improved page load times because much of the dynamic content can now be served from a cloud closer to them.
50% reduction in back-end servers
There was an immediate cost reduction because the company decommissioned servers as soon as they started using Stingray Traffic Manager software in the cloud. Over one year, a combination of the content caching and the service-orientated architecture reduced the back-end server requirement by 50%.
Faster page views and surge protection
Managing 1 million page views per day at See Tickets
Using Stingray caching and traffic rate management, See Tickets can prioritize website traffic to manage the huge peaks in transactions. With 85 percent of ticket sales made online, and 1m page views per day, See Tickets knows how important it is for its customers to access its website all day, every day.
100% uptime
Following rapid deployment of Riverbed Stingray Traffic Manager software, the See Tickets site performed with 100 percent uptime. Stingray helped provide a superior user experience with faster page loading times, and transactions are now completed more quickly.

Stingray Traffic Manager capabilities can be enhanced using TrafficScript or Java extensions.
Stingray Traffic Manager software inspects and processes application traffic, with full payload inspection and streaming. It applies a range of optimization techniques to ensure that incoming requests are presented in the most appropriate manner to the web and application servers. Responses from the application can be compressed, cached, and returned to the client at optimum speed, while freeing up resources on the server. Built-in TrafficScript language allows for full control over how individual requests are optimized, routed, and transformed. Traffic management rules may also be created using Java™ Extensions.
Stingray Traffic Manager software includes a web-based administration interface to display powerful real-time analysis and history for all traffic across Traffic Manager clusters. Alternatively, Stingray Traffic Manager integrates into remote management and event monitoring frameworks using Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) APIs and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
