5 Key Considerations for a Successful VDI Deployment
With IT resources constantly being strained, organizations are looking for ways to gain cost efficiencies while increasing flexibility and ease of management. Enter the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) where desktop operating systems are hosted within virtual machines on a centralized server. This market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 29.7% from 2014-2019 across all major industry verticals. Clearly, VDI has the attention of CIOs – but not all virtualization is the same. VDI has unique considerations that must be addressed in order to achieve the business and IT objectives that the solution promises. Geoffrey Moore, author of Crossing the Chasm, once said "IT is the business." The question is-is this compromise a necessary price to pay?

WAN Optimization and aaNPM: So Much Better Together
WAN optimization solutions such as Riverbed SteelHead have the potential to save your company money and drastically improve worker productivity. By reducing the amount of traffic traversing your expensive MPLS links you can downsize the link—sometimes significantly. By improving latency and making applications respond faster you can improve worked productivity—sometimes by significant amounts. Now that you have seen the benefits of WAN optimization and are planning to deploy it across your environment, have you thought about how you will report, monitor, and troubleshoot your newly optimized environment? According to a recent Gartner report on Best Practices to Gain Visibility in WAN-Optimized Environments, “Adding WAN optimization solutions into the network can introduce blind spots in traditional network and application performance monitoring.”
The answer is with an application-aware network performance monitoring (NPM) solution. NPM software, such as Riverbed SteelCentral NetProfiler or NetExpress, provides answers to all your monitoring, reporting, and troubleshooting needs with WAN optimization and has the added benefit of providing in-depth, network-based troubleshooting as well. Whether you are trying to quantify the benefit gained from reducing bandwidth, identify what applications are the most logical to optimize, or determine which location would make the most sense to deploy at next, NPM solutions can help you with that.

3 Sectors Being Transformed by the Cloud
Recently, I needed a last-minute gift for a close friend and I definitely didn’t have time to run all over town looking for something. My wife suggested the “buy online, pick up in store” offering from Macy’s. I went online, found something suitable, and bought it. Then I simply drove down the street to our local Macy’s and picked it up—all on my lunch hour and with plenty of time to spare.
This experience wouldn’t have been nearly as satisfying without the power of the cloud. Retailers like Macy’s are increasingly relying on cloud technology to better engage customers—both in-store and online. In my case, that simply meant the ability to check store inventory in real time and quickly notify the service reps that I was coming to pick up my just-purchased item.
All this got me thinking: if the cloud is enhancing my shopping experience, how else is it changing the world around me?
We’re seeing it every day—the cloud is transforming nearly every sector. However, in this post, I want to highlight three in particular—government, healthcare, and retail—due to their everyday prominence and the cloud’s potential to impact every level of user in the coming year, from consumers to CIOs.
Government: cloud brings efficiency and savings
As outdated legacy systems are replaced and the federal government’s “Cloud First” mandate is implemented, formerly slow-moving agencies may soon become known for savings and efficiency.
In 2011, the White House issued its Federal Cloud Computing Strategy, the beginning of a shift in federal policy away from traditional, on-premises data centers that were typified by wasteful spending, application visibility challenges, and duplicative systems—not to mention long procurement lead times. The move toward the cloud holds great promise and considerable savings have already materialized.
According to a 2015 report from the Congressional Research Service, federal “agencies reported cost savings of about $96 million… These savings included both one-time and multiyear savings.” Since 2012, the number of cloud services implemented by federal agencies has gone from 21 to 101, and it’s set to increase even more.
Healthcare: cloud empowers patients and improves research
Healthcare providers are starting to realize that the cloud is potentially more secure than their local data center (provided the right protocols and practices are in place). Consumers are accessing their medical records online at a higher rate, and many medical researchers are starting to rely on the cloud’s computing power to process data, opening up new opportunities for medical breakthroughs.
Even though 75% of consumers in 2013 reported that they are concerned about medical record security, 43.6% of healthcare organizations are already using the cloud to host clinical applications and data, with 28.6% reporting improved information security in the cloud.
Security concerns notwithstanding, patients are starting to take advantage of the convenience of online medical records. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology reported that between 2013 and 1014, the number of people who accessed medical records online at least once during the year jumped from 46% to 55%. Furthermore, “About one-third of individuals accessed their medical record one to two times in 2014 whereas about one-fifth of individuals accessed their online record once or twice in 2013.” New services like GE Health Cloud promise to make access to healthcare records even easier and more secure starting as early as 2016 and cloud technology is making medical offices much more efficient.
Cloud computing is also changing the way medical research is done. Fortune recently reported on a Novartis study that ran 40 years of drug simulation in eight hours, costing thousands of dollars rather than the usual millions. Savings in time and money provided by the cloud are enabling scientists to solve problems much faster with huge potential benefits to public health.
Retail: cloud transforms shopping experiences online and in-store
As this Forbes article suggests, advances in cloud technology are enabling retailers to treat every shopper like a celebrity. Of course, during this busy holiday shopping season, supporting customer demands is priority number one....

How Greater Visibility Makes Better Cloud Security Possible
Everyone knows that security can be a challenge in today's complex IT environments. According to recent survey results, 60% of cybersecurity professionals think getting security visibility is more difficult in a cloud-based environment as compared to a physical network. The same survey also showed 50% agree that it's difficult to audit network security when working with cloud computing infrastructure. At Riverbed, we hear these same concerns from customers, that is until they see what Riverbed can do to augment their security capabilities with end-to-end visibility.
It's true that a cloud-based environment can complicate security precautions but only if an enterprise fails to use a robust system for unified visibility. Traditional approaches to gathering security data try to combine reports generated by vulnerability and patch management systems with data gathered by interviewing applications teams. This approach falls short because asset inventories are almost never complete and, at best, are only as current as the last scan. ...

No REST for the Weary
Application Aware Network Performance Monitoring (aaNPM) solutions sit on your network and monitor the traffic. They store information about what hosts are talking to what other hosts over what ports, protocols, and applications sending how much traffic. A wide variety of metrics are available for this information depending on the source of the information being collected and coalesced.

They Went Where?
Tracking where people are going on your network—and ensuring they are going to only those places they should be going is an integral part of properly securing a network. According to The Economist (The Cost of Immaturity, 2015) it takes on average 205 days for a company to detect that it’s network has been compromised. That is more then six months from when an attacker first accesses information on your network to when you first notice the attack has occurred—having nothing to do with the amount of time it takes to recover from such an incident....

Black Friday and Cyber Monday: How Companies Master the Onslaught
The busiest shopping days of the year are here. Black Friday and Cyber Monday see both brick-and-mortar and online outlets running special limited-time promotions to attract festive holiday shoppers. Finding Comfort in Community at JavaOne
JavaOne has always been the place to go to learn about the latest design patterns, best practices, and features resonating in the Java community. It's the premiere technical conference for Java enthusiasts around the world and attracts a lot of software vendors with Java related technology. For years Riverbed has been exhibiting at JavaOne to show its solutions for monitoring and optimizing the performance of web applications. This year Riverbed staked its claim in the JavaOne Expo Hall again, and as usual, we ended the conference both exhausted and exhilarated from so many great conversations with attendees.
Exchanging ideas in the expo hall
For the uninitiated, the Expo Hall is usually the heart of activity at any tech conference. Software vendors pay big bucks for a small space on which to place towering demo stations staffed by company representatives trying to lure you in with swag and candy. Attendees flock to the Expo Hall for a variety of reasons. For some, it's the thrill of scavenging all that is free. Even I enjoy finding giveaways to bring home to my kids. But more importantly, the expo hall serves as a forum where vendors and attendees can swap war stories and talk shop. The JavaOne expo hall is unique because it attracts a deeply technical crowd. It's an exhilarating place to be, for so many reasons!
If you were a fly on the wall at Riverbed's JavaOne booth, this is what you might see:
Anyone you see wearing a branded t-shirt or polo in the expo hall is usually on "booth duty". When we work the booth, we often stand for hours to warmly welcome anyone who approaches. We usually start each conversation at a high level and slowly gauge the attendee's familiarity with our company and the specific products we're demo'ing. The great thing about JavaOne, though, is that we can often skip the corporate overview and go straight into deep dives and technical demos. I love it when an attendee short circuits the overview by asking me to get straight to the technical meat! For a lot of us, our true passion in technology shines best when we're exchanging ideas about technical problems with other experts in our field. My favorite conversations last week stemmed from questions like these:...

Performance! Visibility! Security?
Network security. These words are enough to strike fear into the most cold-hearted CSOs. A network compromise can bring down systems, managers, executives, and even entire companies. Securing the data on your corporate network is not only one of the most important things a company can do, but also one of the hardest.
There are lots of tools that are dedicated to providing network security: vulnerability scanners, intrusion detection and prevention, firewalls, and much more. Every company has its own ideas and approaches to the best ways to achieve the unachievable: the total securing of the corporate network.
As part of your decision on how to secure the network, it is important to recognize that there is no one tool that is going to provide your entire solution. A firewall will help keep people outside your network from getting in, but does nothing to help once someone is on the inside. An intrusion device will help identify when someone intrudes, but does nothing to secure the perimeter. The trick is to have an entire arsenal of tools that can be used to identify issues and then investigate and thus rectify them....

Mark Zuckerberg, Virtual Reality and a SD-WAN Conference? Connecting The Links With Riverbed.
Did you know that Facebook is coming out with Virtual Reality? Apparently, Mark Zuckerberg wants to build a system that would enable users to “experience everything they would in reality - vision, hearing, memory etc.” even though they may be across an Internet circuit.
Facebook isn’t the only gang-of-geeks reigniting this technology. Samsung seems to have launched Samsung Gear VR. Google has Cardboard. And, based on a report by Fortune magazine, Apple has entered the Twilight Zone too.
Generally, today’s world is a humungous toy store, with new technologies that make our jaws drop, eyes widen and wallets disappear (I was referring to Apple Pay). The goodies aren’t just for individual consumers and businesses that invest wisely may be able to turn technology to profits.
The question is, do we have the backbone (read: network) to handle all of this coolness?...

Apps drive business results
Software is pervasive! It has transformed industries, supercharging productivity and connectivity, and has spawned new opportunities that help us stay competitive. Software is eating the world—big bites at a time.
Developers and operations teams make apps happen
IT develops and delivers applications. But requirements constantly evolve as users demand more features. This increases pressure on developers and operations teams to deliver software rapidly without compromising reliability or around-the-clock availability. How do they expedite release cycles and maximize time spent on new features as opposed to maintaining existing code? It comes down to two practices:
- In Dev/Test: Ensure release quality prior to release: Identifying all erroneous code during testing helps developers fix them early. Detailed transaction tracing can help QA expose and diagnose bottlenecks so that developers have the information they need to resolve them quickly. This helps make releases production ready.
- In Production: Resolve errors ASAP: Monitoring apps in production ensures that you are the first know when problems strike. Recording every transaction from user to back-end along with its associated system metrics and call tree details help developers reconstruct incidents and eliminate root cause quickly.
Take control of app performance with AppInternals
Helping developers and operations stay focused on delivering new features is important for businesses to stay competitive. SteelCentral AppInternals arms them with the diagnostics they need to minimize time spent fixing bugs, maximize release quality, and keep them focus on delivering business-impacting applications. Don’t take my word for it......

Branch offices are the growth engines of today’s enterprises. Riverbed's journey to collaboration nirvana
Not long ago, collaboration in the workplace was a pretty primitive affair. Tons of email and file attachments were the rule. Then came “collaboration” applications, including web conferencing, Internet file shares, social systems, which helped to connect people more efficiently. But these apps alone don’t achieve the full potential on collaborating in real-time on the same work product; they tend to be single threaded, application centric actions, minimizing the real benefit we all seek, improved quality through collaboration and getting it done faster.
We have come a long way since then. With the latest collaboration technologies – which Riverbed has been rolling out over the past year – we’re not just connecting people better and cutting down on inefficient email and attachments. We are helping our people discover and share ideas, better manage unstructured information, making it findable, enabling teams globally to have a faster experience in working together, from anywhere....

We are at the beginning of a WAN architecture evolution
In the last two months I’ve seen my home broadband double in speed and my mobile phone data plan include 5x more data – with no price increases. This is great since I occasionally telecommute and often use my mobile phone as a hotspot – I need fast, reliable connectivity wherever I am. Right now, my broadband is costing me about $1 per megabit of bandwidth per month. Broadband has never been cheaper – whether you use cable, DSL, fiber, etc. for your home or business.
It’s no secret that most enterprises, including many of Riverbed’s customers are still heavily dependent on MPLS for their WAN connectivity. MPLS has seen some decline in costs, but is still very expensive relative to broadband....

Imagine the following scenario: you run IT for a large consumer electronics retail chain, and you're pulled away from your Thanksgiving dinner by an urgent phone call. The point of sales (POS) system is down at your flagship location. Eager shoppers are lining up for the midnight Black Friday opening. Black Friday sales make the difference between profit and loss, so it’s critical that the store open on time. Frantically, you ask the branch manager, "When were the DR plans last tested?" A long pause followed by “umm….” confirms your fears. With little optimism, you instruct the branch manager to implement the DR plans.

SaaS: The dilemma of visibility and control
The shift to software as a service (SaaS) is the leading agent of change in application adoption as companies seek better business agility, quicker implementation, and a more frequent and less disruptive updating model.
Organizations have embraced SaaS; in fact, a whole generation of users has never loaded software onto a personal computer. It should come as no surprise that those same users carry their experiences and expectations into the workplace for everything from customer relationship tools like Salesforce.com to HR software like Workday.
The supply of SaaS solutions is increasing and will continue to do so at an ever increasing pace. According to Forrester Research (Application Adoption Trends: The Rise Of SaaS) SaaS spending accounts for the 23% of the application software budget. However, it grew a whopping 53% over the previous year (4Q 2012-4Q 2013). In addition to customer relationship management (CRM), SaaS adoption is strong in human resources management, collaboration tools, and e-procurement. Forrester is also seeing a dramatic increase in SaaS interest in business intelligence (BI) and several other application categories....

Let's disrupt the branch office!
At Riverbed FORCE yesterday Geoffrey Moore talked a lot about disruption – investing in it, and deploying it. While the word “disruption” might for some sound negative, when you use it in light of improving on the same ol’ same ol’ ways of doing things – it is a strong positive (c’mon – typewriter or computer…?).
Riverbed SteelFusion is very much a “disruption” of the traditional ways of provisioning IT in a branch office. It takes the best of virtualization, the best of SteelHead WAN optimization and combines it with new storage intelligence (what we call BlockStream) that lets you move away from heavy server, storage, and backup infrastructure in each and every branch office to something far more streamlined, and far more agile....

Bringing converged thinking to the branch office
Rumors of a VMware-engineered hyper-converged infrastructure have been circulating for months, mostly under the code name MARVIN. The rumors turned out to be true: this week, at VMworld San Francisco, VMware announced VMware EVO:RAIL, which combines compute, networking, and storage resources, plus vSphere and vCenter and vSAN, into a hyper-converged infrastructure appliance to create a simple, easy to deploy, all-in-one solution. This seems like a solid building block for the small-to-midsized enterprise that is interested in quickly deploying resources tailored for the software-defined data center. As Riverbed’s Rob Whiteley (@rwhiteley0) points out, converged and hyper-converged infrastructure solutions will change the way virtual machines are provisioned and protected:...
