After installing Riverbed Steelhead appliances at its UK and Dubai offices, Lucy Switchgear experienced a 50% reduction in bandwidth utilization and 90% improvement in file transfer times.
The Riverbed® Optimization System (RiOS®) 7.0 introduces stream splitting for video delivery over http, natively on Riverbed Steelhead® appliances. Additional key features include packet mode optimization to optimize UDP-based applications, native Skipware® integration, an on-demand packet capture and analysis functionality, enhancements for the Citrix ICA protocol, and a host of other features.
Native stream splitting for http video — With RiOS 7.0, Riverbed delivers a native stream splitting capability for http video delivery within the enterprise. Support includes the industry’s first http-based stream splitting capability for Microsoft Silverlight and for Adobe Flash video. Legacy video formats continue to be supported via the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP).
UDP for replication solutions and IPv6 — With the release of RiOS 7.0, organizations now have the flexibility to optimize applications that run on both TCP/IP and UDP, including replication solutions such as Symantec® Veritas™ Volume Replicator, NetApp® SnapMirror®, Aspera, and Signiant®. These applications can consume substantial bandwidth, making connectionless, packet-by-packet optimization a necessity. In addition, as IPv6 is adopted, RiOS 7.0 ensures that organizations are able to seamlessly transition without compromising performance.
Enhancements for desktop virtualization — Customers can now optimize ICA over SSL, as well as a client drive mapping functionality, for Citrix XenDesktop environments. With this support now available, Riverbed delivers complete coverage for desktop virtualization infrastructure products from Citrix.
On-demand packet capture and analysis on the Steelhead appliance — RiOS 7.0 includes integration of packet capture functionality on the Riverbed Steelhead® appliance for on-board analysis of application problems with an intuitive, visual interface. This feature is fully integrated with Cascade Pilot™, enabling customers to isolate application-specific issues, and even replay application transactions, by leveraging their Steelhead appliance deployment.
Skipware integration — This release introduces Skipware functionality natively on Steelhead appliances so that customers do not need an RSP package for optimizing satellite links. RiOS 7.0 delivers fully integrated management and a UI for Skipware, with support for port transparency as well.
More application optimizations — With RiOS 7.0, Riverbed continues to extend its portfolio of application-specific optimizations with support for encrypted Lotus Notes and end-to-end Kerberos authentication for Microsoft applications. This release also includes an improved version of CIFS pre-population with more granular control, auto configuration for http optimization , SSL proxy support, SMTP over TLS, and DSCP marking for QoS.
