ABB is a global leader in power and automation technologies, with about 30,000 people in its North American operations alone, dispersed across manufacturing, service, and other facilities. Michael Kerkau, network infrastructure and operations manager, has sole responsibility for the North American operations network. ABB North America's application suite is a critical part of business operations as the applications handle ordering and pricing for the manufacturing and shipping teams.
"These applications are used thousands of times an hour and it's a real hit to the business when they are not performing well," said Kerkau. "Our business leaders tell me that an outage can cost their business $1,000,000 a day. When an application running over a network performs poorly, the network usually gets the blame. For us, the network is not the cause 80 to 90% of the time, but it is the first thing people point to."
Without the ability to quickly prove otherwise, Kerkau spent up to 40% of his time looking for clues to convince applications owners that the inefficiencies were more typically found in the configurations of the servers, firewalls, or in the applications themselves. To quickly find the root of the problem, Kerkau set up a two-part strategy: Riverbed SteelCentral solutions combined with the expertise of Riverbed Professional Services.
"I use Riverbed SteelCentral Web Analyzer as the canary in the coal mine to tell me when we might be experiencing issues with certain applications," added Kerkau. "The network diagnosis always comes first. But, when no culprit is found, the investigation typically stalled. Now, with Web Analyzer, I can see application performance from end-to-end, track key performance metrics, get granular analysis of application behavior, and share it with the applications and server owners. That enables the support teams to quickly shift the focus of the effort to the real culprit."
Kerkau used to spend up to 16 hours/week troubleshooting application performance problems. Now, with Web Analyzer, he is down to about an hour a week because he can quickly pinpoint the problem and show the details to the technical experts. Kerkau is also spreading the use of Web Analyzer throughout the organization.
"When there were issues, I used to get all of the calls. Instead, now I'm hearing stories that application owners are using Riverbed to track down issues that are happening with their applications, their servers, and their own configurations to improve their own application performance," said Kerkau. "It's huge that we now have application owners talking to application users about application problems."
