Quester Provides Centralized IT Services to Employees in Retail Stores With Riverbed WAN Optimization
Riverbed Enables Austrian Do-It-Yourself Retailer to Provide Print, File and Email Services in Retail Stores and Avoid a Costly Server Installation Project
SAN FRANCISCO—May 02, 2012— Quester Baustoffhandel Gmbh is a leading supplier of building materials in Austria for both domestic and industrial use. Quester is part of the CRH Group, an international building material company, which operates in 34 countries worldwide and is listed on the Irish, London and New York stock exchanges. Quester has 23 retail stores throughout Austria with 600 employees.
To oversee operations for warehouse management, inventory and finance, Quester’s employees access the centralized servers to work with business-critical applications like Citrix, Microsoft Office and custom applications, via a Telnet connection. When faced with the requirement to provide more applications at a local level so that regional employees could utilize email, file, and print services, Quester considered installing local servers at each store location. Michael Janisch, head of IT at Quester explained: “We quickly realized that installing local servers would initially require the IT department to spend two days per week providing maintenance and support, a total of 100 worker days per year. We discussed our project with our IT partner ACP, and they suggested that we consider a WAN optimization solution instead. Upon further investigation we decided to implement the Riverbed solution as we understood Riverbed to be the leader in this sector.”
With the Steelhead appliances installed across all of its stores, the warehouse and data center, Quester was able to avoid a costly server install and thereby avoid the associated maintenance and support costs. As Janisch says: “By opting to deploy the Riverbed WAN optimization solution we not only avoided that cost but in addition we don’t need to spend money on server licenses. We can now perform software upgrades quickly and easily, and because we host the applications in the data center we can easily manage the security of those applications. It is these savings which made WAN optimization the more cost effective solution for our business.”
