Digital Competencies for Digital Transformation: Where Do You Stand?

SHARE ON:

Just about every company is embarking on digital transformation today — but not all companies have developed the in-house skills, behaviors, and abilities to do it right. Where does your company stand in comparison to peers when it comes to developing digital competencies?

Riverbed has teamed up with the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) to survey 512 senior business and government leaders from around the world to assess the digital competencies that help organizations improve digital performance and, ultimately, achieve their objectives. And to help you assess your own organization's strengths and challenges, Riverbed and the EIU have also created an interactive tool that can assess your digital competencies and explain how you stack up to your competition. We'll look at the assessment tool in a moment, but first let's discuss what we mean by digital competencies, and why they're such an important signal of your organization's performance.

Digital competencies are vital to achieving positive outcomes

When we talk about digital competencies, we mean broad areas in which companies demonstrate their abilities to make use of technological tools to advance their goals. In the Riverbed–EIU survey, we asked respondents to assess themselves on the following competencies:

  • Analytics using customer and/or operational data from digital systems
  • Ability to manage and measure the user and/or employee digital experience
  • Digital product and service innovation
  • Digital talent recruitment, retention, and management
  • IT infrastructure modernization/transformation
  • Automation of business processes with digital technology
  • Digital development techniques (e.g., Agile, design thinking)
  • Organization-wide digital transformation strategy
  • Workplace transformation with digital technologies

Eight in ten respondents see these competencies as very or extremely important to achieving their organizational goals, with analytics, digital experience management, and IT infrastructure modernization being among the most frequently cited. And respondents definitely saw a gap between their ideals and their reality: Nearly two-thirds of respondents say their competency deficits negatively affect user experience, and almost half aim to improve their digital experience management.

One of the key purposes of the study was to see how high performers — respondents who say their organizations grew revenue by at least 6% in 2018, that they’ve received measurable benefits from digital strategies, and that they’re confident about their ability to overcome digital competency challenges — compared to the rest of the field. These standout organizations were more likely than their peers to rate IT infrastructure modernization as a top priority, and believed their IT teams should having a leading role in developing and delivering the right competencies.

How do you stack up?

To better help you understand how this data applies to you, Riverbed and the EIU have created an interactive online assessment tool based on survey data. The tool compares your own self-assessment with others in your industry, geographic region, and job function. It also shows you where you fall in comparison with all survey respondents and high performers.

In addition to the graphical overview shown in Figure 1, our tool also prepares a custom report that digs deep into your responses and shows you where your organization is doing well or needs improvement

Digital transformation is a sometimes arduous journey, and too often organizations start off in the dark. We hope this data will help light your way and help you understand the landscape.
