"InfoWorld's Technology of the Year Award winners are the best products we know, but they're more than great products," said Doug Dineley, executive editor of InfoWorld's Test Center. "These are the tools that point the way to the data centers, clouds and applications of tomorrow. They're the innovations that are changing the way we work and do business."
"Riverbed was founded to eliminate distance and location as constraints in delivering applications over wide area networks (WANs), which we are solving with Steelhead," said Jerry M. Kennelly, Chairman and CEO of Riverbed. "With Granite, we developed another disruptive technology that is addressing the challenge of centralizing data while enabling instant recovery of data at the branch office. We're focused on the challenges related to distance and location, a concept called location-independent computing. It's part of Riverbed's technology DNA."
Riverbed offers the most complete platform to enable organizations to embrace location-independent computing, so that business objectives - not technical constraints - drive how applications and data are delivered. The Riverbed Application Performance Platform™ is a set of integrated solutions that give companies the flexibility to host applications and data in the locations that best serve the business while ensuring the flawless delivery of those apps to better leverage global resources, radically reduce the cost of running their business, and maximize employee productivity.
Launched in 2004, Steelhead was the first WAN optimization solution of its kind, capable of reducing bandwidth requirements for applications by as much as 95 percent and improving application performance as much as 100 times. The product's launch forged a new market for WAN Optimization, which Steelhead has led since the beginning. Steelhead continues as the industry's #1 WAN optimization solution.
Four years ago, Riverbed began to transform from a single-product company to a platform company with an expanded and integrated product set developed by internal innovation and acquisition. In February 2012, Riverbed introduced Granite, invented by Riverbed CTO David Wu. Granite is the only branch converged infrastructure that delivers local performance while enabling data centralization, instant recovery, and lower total cost of ownership (TCO). Granite changes completely how global enterprises deploy, manage, and recover branch office servers and data while delivering lower TCO. With Granite, global enterprises can achieve complete consolidation of edge applications, servers and storage to the data center and deliver services to the edge of the enterprise as if they were local. The technology is complementary to WAN optimization, accelerating performance for applications and use cases not addressed by any WAN optimization approach today.
These recognitions build on Steelhead winning a seven vendor Network World WAN optimization test in November 2013 and being named a Best of the Tests winner in December 2013. Network World's Best of the Tests recognizes the top 10 products reviewed in 2013 that break new ground or deliver fresh insight into an important product area.
Riverbed Steelhead is the industry's #1 WAN optimization solution that accelerates the delivery of applications to the branch and from the cloud, and allows IT to prioritize delivery of mission-critical applications over the fastest networks. The ONLY leader in the "Gartner Magic Quadrant for WAN Optimization Controllers" for six years in a row, Steelhead pioneered WAN optimization with unique innovations for application and data streamlining across the WAN and Internet to deliver the best end-user experience regardless of location, network or device while dramatically reducing network bandwidth. With Steelhead, SaaS apps can be delivered up to 33 times faster while using 97 percent less bandwidth. As a result, Steelhead has become critical to Microsoft Office 365 deployments with over one million users being accelerated to date.
Riverbed Granite is a branch converged infrastructure solution that eliminates the headache of branch office IT, consolidating servers and storage into the datacenter without sacrificing any of the benefits of having servers at the edge close to users. Granite expedites branch office provisioning, backup and recovery and ensures continuous operations when disasters occur such as inclement weather, fire and human-induced outages. With Granite, businesses can restore operations in a matter of minutes vs. days, centrally protect and secure data and significantly lower the TCO of branch and remote offices.
