NPM+ Core Extends Network Visibility to macOS Endpoints

Riverbed NPM+ Core brings connection-level visibility to Mac endpoints, simplifying network and application troubleshooting across macOS and Windows.

For many years, enterprise NetOps were built around endpoint environments dominated by Windows. As Mac adoption grows, a meaningful portion of the workforce may be left outside the network troubleshooting picture.

That gap matters because Macs are no longer niche endpoints in enterprise environments. IDC found that more than 45% of enterprises have macOS devices in their environments and that Macs represent approximately 15% of endpoints in large enterprises. Omdia reported that Apple captured 11% of the U.S. enterprise personal computer market in 2025, up 2.4 points from the previous year.

But enterprise troubleshooting practices have not kept pace. Organizations may manage their Macs effectively while still lacking the connection-level evidence needed when a Mac user reports a performance issue.

A Managed Mac Can Still Be a Network Blind Spot

Mac management tools help IT deploy devices, maintain configurations, distribute software, enforce policies, and assess device posture. Those functions are essential, but managing a Mac is not the same as understanding how its network and application connections are performing.

When a Mac user says a collaboration application keeps disconnecting, Salesforce is slow, or a cloud service will not load, NetOps needs answers that device inventory and configuration data cannot provide:

  • Which application and process generated the connection?
  • Which network interface was the Mac using?
  • Was the delay in the network or the application response?
  • Were connections failing, resetting, or being retransmitted?
  • Did the problem affect one Mac or a larger group of user endpoints?
  • Do the affected users share a location, network interface, or destination?

Without that evidence, Mac-related tickets can move between the service desk, endpoint management teams, application owners, and NetOps. Each team may confirm that its portion of the environment looks healthy without identifying the source of the problem.

What NPM+ Core Support for macOS Changes

As the foundation of NPM+, the Core Module provides continuous connection-level visibility for everyday network monitoring and rapid triage. With macOS support, that visibility extends to Mac endpoints through the Riverbed Unified Agent, bringing Mac telemetry into the NPM+ Core operational view.

NPM+ Core analyzes packet activity on the endpoint and converts it into network and application performance insight. It provides metrics including connection setup time, round-trip time, server response time, throughput, failed connections, resets, retransmissions, and zero-window conditions.

Those metrics are connected to the troubleshooting context NetOps needs, including the user, endpoint, application, process, network interface, location, server, port, IP conversation, and TLS name. This helps NetOps move issues from a general complaint to the specific connections and conditions involved.

NPM+ Core complements Mac management and security tools by adding the connection and application performance evidence NetOps needs for troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting the Mac User’s Actual Connection

Consider a MacBook user who reports that a SaaS application accessed directly over the internet performs well on the office network but becomes unreliable on home Wi-Fi. The device appears healthy, the SaaS provider reports no outage, and centralized monitoring shows no obvious problem.

Using telemetry from the NPM+ Core Module, NetOps can identify the network interface used at each location and compare round-trip time, retransmissions, and server response time between locations and with other endpoints accessing the same service. That evidence can narrow the investigation to the local wireless connection, changing network conditions, or application response. It may also reveal a shared pattern, turning an isolated ticket into a broader service issue.

A More Consistent View Across Mac and Windows

Adding macOS support to NPM+ Core helps reduce the separation between Mac and Windows troubleshooting. NetOps can apply a more consistent connection-level investigation process across both endpoint populations instead of treating Mac users as a separate group with less evidence.

This shared visibility improves collaboration among NetOps, service desk, and endpoint management teams. Rather than debating whether the problem belongs to the device, network connection, or application, teams can begin with connection-level evidence.

Macs are already a meaningful and growing part of enterprise environments. With NPM+ Core support for macOS, NetOps can extend connection-level troubleshooting to Mac users and close a visibility gap that endpoint management tools typically do not address.
