Chairman of the Board and
Chief Executive Officer
David Murphy was appointed interim CEO of Riverbed Technology in October 2019, and also serves as Chairman of Riverbed’s Board of Directors. Murphy is one of the Silicon Valley’s most highly regarded business executives with over 30 years of experience holding top leadership roles driving market expansion, revenue growth and operational excellence. Currently, Murphy is a Senior Operating Partner at Thoma Bravo, and in that capacity is a Director of several investments.
Murphy is the former President and COO of Blue Coat, which was a Thoma Bravo portfolio company during his tenure in that position and subsequently was sold to Bain Capital. During his time at Blue Coat, David was instrumental in developing the company’s focused security and acquisition strategy. Prior to Blue Coat, he was Senior Vice President for HP’s LaserJet and Enterprise Solutions business unit within the company’s Imaging and Printing Group (IPG). He joined HP through its acquisition of Mercury Interactive, where he was chief financial officer. Prior to that, Dave was president and general manager of IBM Tivoli. He also served as CEO at Asera and as partner at McKinsey & Company.
Murphy has a MSEE degree from Florida Atlantic University, an MBA degree from Stanford University, and a BS degree in Computer Science from the University of Louisville.
Chief Operating Officer and
Chief Customer Officer
Dan Smoot is Chief Operating Officer and Chief Customer Officer for Riverbed Technology. He is responsible for the company’s Strategic Business Operations, Manufacturing and CDO/IT organizations, as well as management of the Company’s annual operating plan.
As Chief Customer Officer, Smoot is also responsible for focusing on the customer’s journey and their success, while ensuring they receive outstanding value and performance from their technology investments. He is responsible for global support and renewals, professional services, education, customer success management and Riverbed’s vertical solutions. He also focuses on the customer lifecycle strategy in order to drive long-term partnerships with both Riverbed customers and channel to deliver exceptional experiences and services. Smoot joined Riverbed in June 2018 and was promoted to COO in September 2019.
Prior to his current role, Smoot was Executive Vice President of Global Partner Sales at Salesforce where he managed the worldwide partner sales organization, with an annual contract value target of $2.1B. He was also Executive Vice President of Market Readiness at Salesforce where he created a global organization to deliver critical go-to-market operations. Prior to Salesforce, Smoot worked at VMware as Senior Vice President of Global Customer Operations where he oversaw global services and renewals, global channels and alliances, OEM sales and go-to-market strategy. Before VMware, he spent more than 10 years in a variety of senior leadership roles at Cisco.
Smoot holds a B.A. in Environmental Science from the University of California, Irvine.
Chief Sales Officer
Andy Elder was appointed Chief Sales Officer of Riverbed Technology in April 2018 and is responsible for Riverbed’s global sales and partner strategy as well as go-to-market execution, leading the team to drive and accelerate the next wave of growth worldwide. Elder joined Riverbed as Senior Vice President of Sales in EMEA in March 2017.
Prior to joining Riverbed, Elder was President EMEA at Intel Security, and was responsible for go-to-market and operations for 100 countries, and led Intel Security to become the #1 security vendor in EMEA. Before that, Elder spent three years at Intellectual Ventures as Executive Vice President of Global Licensing of intellectual property and invention rights. He has more than 25 years of industry experience, including 13 years at Cisco in many roles, such as the Vice President of Global Sales for the Sports and Entertainment division.
Chief Marketing Officer
Subbu Iyer is Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President at Riverbed Technology. Iyer’s responsibilities span corporate marketing and communications, web/digital marketing, strategic and solutions marketing, channel marketing, demand generation and campaigns, and global field marketing.
He joins Riverbed from EMC, where he was Senior Vice President of Global Product Marketing and focused on storage, converged infrastructure, big data and hybrid cloud solutions. Previously, Iyer spent five years at HP Software in a variety of roles, including as a leader in HP’s Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) Business where he oversaw products, go-to-market and operations for a $1B software business. Before HP, he was CMO at OpenClovis (open source high availability and system management), and also held management positions at Oracle, VERITAS Software, and several startups in the software industry.
Iyer holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
Chief Human Resources Officer
Lori Spence is Senior Vice President, Human Resources at Riverbed Technology. Spence’s responsibilities include all worldwide HR and operations for employees in 37 countries, including recruiting, human resources business partner activities, benefits and compensation, immigration, HR systems/shared services, and learning development.
Prior to joining Riverbed in 2010, she was VP of Human Resources at BenefitStreet, a privately held SaaS (Software as a Service) company that provided 401(k) recordkeeping and administration services. Spence has more than 25 years of experience in human resources, recruiting, training, organizational development, employee relations, change management and executive development. She has also held various senior human resources positions with Commerce One, Williams-Sonoma, PAPYRUS and Macy’s.
Spence has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Central Michigan University.
Senior Vice President and
General Manager, Aternity Division
Mike Sargent is Senior Vice President and General Manager at Riverbed Technology. Sargent is an experienced global technology executive with a history of transforming and optimizing business innovation, performance and growth.
In his current role, Sargent leads the Aternity Division of Riverbed, which offers solutions that bring together end-user experience monitoring and application performance management for monitoring and managing the digital experience of large-scale transformation initiatives. Sargent has held leadership positions with CA Technologies, Oliver Wyman and Bain & Company.
Chief Development Officer,
Senior Vice President and
General Manager, CIBU
Dante Malagrino is Chief Development Officer as well as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Cloud Infrastructure Business Unit (CIBU). He oversees the development of intelligent and software-defined solutions, including market-leading SD-WAN, Application Acceleration, and Network Performance Management product lines, that offer agility to customers across the globe. CIBU delivers innovative next-generation digital networking products that make the network as elastic and dynamic as the Cloud, and help organzations maximize digital performance.
Malagrino joined Riverbed in April 2018 as the leader of CIBU engineering organization and was promoted to his current role in January 2019. He is an entrepreneur and general manager with a strong technical background, a passion for innovation, and operational experience in both start-ups and large company environments. Malagrino brings 20+ years of experience to Riverbed, including a long tenure at Cisco where he covered several roles in engineering, marketing and product management. He also founded and led Embrane, a leading SDN (Software-Defined Networking) company that was acquired by Cisco in 2015.
Malagrino holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science Engineering from Politecnico di Torino in Italy.
Alpna J. Doshi
Chief Digital Officer
Alpna J, Doshi is the Chief Digital Officer at Riverbed Technology and an Operating Partner at Thoma Bravo. At Riverbed, Doshi is responsible for company’s business agility with an enterprise IT strategy and execution, as well as leading Riverbed’s global digital transformation, including state of art business process and overseeing business systems, technology and digital services for Riverbed and the Aternity division. Doshi has more than 27 years of global experience as an executive in the information technology, healthcare and telecommunications industries. She is widely recognized for her role in driving digitization, innovation and growth while implementing bold visions and ensuring that IT has a seat at the strategy table.
Previously, Doshi served as the Group CIO and Worldwide Digital Transformation leader of Royal Philips in the Netherlands where she spearheaded a transformation project that enabled the global digital backbone for the organization. Prior to that, she was CIO of Reliance Communications, leading diverse businesses shared services IT organization Reliance Tech Services, based in Mumbai, India.
Doshi is a highly respected international thought leader, has been a Board Director with TM Forum, held Governance council, Systems Integration Committee Chair roles, and presented at numerous global events. She was a CIO of the Year Award Nominee by ICT Media Europe in 2018.
Rebecca Hazard is General Counsel of Riverbed Technology and Corporate Secretary to the Riverbed Board of Directors. Hazard is responsible for all legal matters as well as trade compliance.
Previously, she served as Riverbed’s Vice President and Associate General Counsel, managing a global team of lawyers and legal professionals, responsible for commercial and technology transactions worldwide, including inbound and outbound licensing, channel sales agreements, privacy, outsourcing, OEM, and intellectual property matters. In private practice, Hazard was an attorney at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in the Technology & IP Transactions practice group where she focused on the acquisition, financing and sale of intellectual property and technology-focused businesses, including public and private acquisition and sale and licensing transactions.
Hazard holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College (cum laude) and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
